The Porsche 914 was a joint development between Porsche and Volkswagen to be the new entry-level model for the 1970 model year. Porsche quickly realized the 912 could no longer be produced cheaply enough to qualify as entry-level, while newly released vehicles such as the Datsun 240Z were making a mockery of it on a performance level.
The mid-engined 914/6 was produced between 1970-72 and utilized a carbureted version of Porsche’s 2.0L six-cylinder engine. The suspension was upgraded to better accommodate the increased output of 110 hp. 79% of all 914/6s where produced for the 1970 model year (2,668), with only 443 made for 1971 and 240 for 1972. With such a limited production run, the 914/6 is a welcome addition to any collection.
